Gallery Fortescue Avenue
2005, installation, Gallery Fortescue Avenue, London, U.K.
Keiko Uenishi aka o.blaat’s installation was housed inside a cargo container. The piece was partly inspired by the experience of traveling, as human freight, on the New York subway. A snare drum stood in the middle with a low-wattage bulb hanging over it. Two corner fluorescent strip lights flickered on and off in response to sonic stimuli. There were four loudspeakers, producing sounds that tended to gravitate towards a low throb that made the snare drum rattle and the whole container resonate. The piece had a snare-like quality, capturing the claustrophobia and disorientation of underground travel. The installation also had an inescapable but accidental further resonance, given the experience of underground travel in London after the bombs. – by Will Montgomery, an excerpt from The Wire magazine, issue 259, September 2005
